Diamonds are graded on four characteristics: Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat. Here is what each one does to a pear, specifically, in plain language.

Cut: the one that matters most, and the trickiest for a pear: Cut is not shape; it is how well the facets are proportioned and polished.
