Diamonds are graded on four characteristics: Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat. Here's what each one does to a cushion specifically, in plain language.

Cut: the one that matters most: Cut is not shape; it's how well the facets are proportioned and polished. It's what separates a cushion that glows from one that looks flat and lifeless. Two things to watch for in cushions, in particular. First, depth: very deep cushions can look smaller than their carat weight and lose light, so well-proportioned depth keeps a stone lively and generous. Second, the bow-tie effect: a shadow shaped like a bow-tie across the centre that some elongated cushions show when light escapes through the bottom instead of bouncing back. A well-cut cushion minimises it. Because major labs don't issue a single overall cut grade for cushions the way they do for rounds, this is where certification and a trained eye matter most, and where Reia's own quality control does the work for you.

Colour: how white the stone is: Graded D (completely colourless) down to Z (visibly tinted). Cushions hold a little more warmth than some shapes because of their facet structure, so a bright colour grade keeps a white-diamond look crisp. Caring for Your Cushion-Cut Ring

A diamond is the hardest natural material there is, but the gold around it and the security of the setting still need a little care.

Clean it at home every couple of weeks: soak for 20 to 30 minutes in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap, brush gently behind and around the stone with a soft toothbrush (the corners and the underside of a cushion are where skin oils and lotion gather and dull the glow), rinse and pat dry with a lint-free cloth.

Take it off for the gym, gardening, cleaning with harsh chemicals, swimming pools (chlorine), and applying lotions or perfume.
