Have we fallen in love with diamonds or the idea of it?
Once a symbol of wealth and power, diamonds have become synonymous with fame, luxury, fashion and art. These carbon based structures are essentially what’s driving the world up, helping people feel elevated.
Let’s take a step back and have a look at what really makes them so special.
Diamonds are eternal. In the 20th century, market monopolists spurred demand while they controlled supply. Even if we were to remove the weight of the price tag attached to a diamond, it is still one of the most beautiful creations on earth.
As we have equated diamonds with adjectives ranging from power and wealth to class and luxury across centuries, we seem to have lost focus on what makes a diamond unique. It isn’t it’s price tag, it isn’t the pretty woman on the billboard, and it definitely isn’t the fact that millions of people around the world, sell their souls to get their hands on them. It is the very fact that – diamonds are a thing of beauty.
A diamond’s sparkle and clarity, is known to captivate our eyes and mesmerise our minds. But what makes these structures truly stunning is how they help lift a person, adorned by it.
Some might argue that this is primarily due to the positioning pulled off marketing masterminds over the 20th century to “make people want diamonds”. So before we jump into conclusions, let’s ask ourselves this…
Have we fallen in love with diamonds or the idea of it?
The next time you notice someone wearing diamond jewellery, notice how they can’t stop smiling, notice how they keep checking themselves out, notice how they’re carrying themselves and more importantly – notice how they feel so tall.
It isn’t a mystery, how diamonds are capable of lifing us off the ground. After all, Marilyn Monroe did sing that “diamonds are a girl’s best friend”.
So does it really matter where we get our diamonds from, as long as it makes us happy?
Lab grown diamonds may not be dug out of the earth, but they’re here because we could dig it out of our minds.
This isn’t a debate, this is the future.
